Since more than ten years microwave amateurs from France, Swiss, Italy and Spain
are meeting on a weekend in June, in order to make SSB and ATV contacts across
the western mediterrainean sea. This event is called "grande bleue".
In 2005 one spektacular result was an ATV contact from IS/HB9IBC (Sardinia) over 
1153 km to EA9SHF in the spanian enclave Melilla (Morocco, northern Africa).
The picture quality was P5 on 10 GHz and made a good press and TV coverage.
Not less remarkable was a duplex contact between IS/HB9IBC and EA3/F4CXQ, 
EA3/F1URI over 450 km in FM-ATV und DATV. The 10 GHz-DATV quality of P5 did not
change even with only 10 mW power output from F4CXQ! There were AGAF digital 
ATV units in use, parameters QPSK with SR 4167, FEC 1/2.
